Fun Holidays as Bridges to New Experiences

Dear Ohio Autism Community,

Inspiration escaped me as I considered what to write for this month’s newsletter. As I searched the internet for ideas, I came across what appears to be a comprehensive list of February holidays. Who knew that February 3rd was World Play Your Ukelele Day or that February 26 was International Tongue Twister Day? I began to think about the usefulness of the list for Autistics and those who love them.

One of the struggles for many on the Spectrum is stepping out of routine and trying new things. Perhaps this list, and those for other months, could be a bridge to new experiences. If we decide to choose one new thing from the list each month, that is twelve new experiences each year. I missed National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day on February 1st, but February 13th is National Tortellini Day, February 25th is National Clam Chowder Day – an opportunity to try a new food? February 16th is Do a Grouch a Favor Day. You could bake together on National Banana Bread Day (February 23rd).

Another possibility is to use this list to start conversations. February 3rd was Elmo’s birthday. A Sesame Street lover might be able to talk about what they think Elmo would do to celebrate or what would be the best gift to give him. February 26th is National Set a Good Example Day – a chance to discuss what a “good example” is and how we can set one? There are also research/learning opportunities. A visit to the library or a Google search might result in interesting facts for International Polar Bear Day (February 27th), Susan B. Anthony Day (February 15th) or Frederick Douglass Day (February 14th).

The possibilities are endless!
